HUET is a part of TBOSIET
Nearly all oil and gas companies demand a minimum certification before undertaking work on an offshore facility on the North West Shelf.
This minimum certification is the Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training Course (TBOSIET).
The TBOSIET is currently current up to 4 years before requiring a refresher course to maintain certification but this may vary at the discretion of each employer.
Although the HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) makes up part of this training there are many other topics and skills that the course encompasses including:
Apply offshore facility abandonment and sea survival procedures and practices
- Undertake helicopter safety and escape.
- practice first response to fire incidents, fire fighting and escaping in smoke
- Survival at sea in event of vessel abandonment.
The TBOSIET is a 2 day course and contains facilitated lessons, practicals and assessments.
The course demands some physical strength, fitness and endurance.
Below is a list of some of the practical demands made on a candidate
- Navigate through a "smoke room" on hands and knees while wearing a smoke hood.
- Use fire extinguishers and hose on fires.
- Jump from 3m into pool wearing a life jacket.
- Climb into and out of life rafts.
- Get winched from the water by double belt (strop).
- Assist colleagues in and out of raft.
- Ascend and descend cargo nets (into and out of water).
- Ascend and descend stair wells.
- Submersion and inversion in a swimming pool in a helicopter simulator (up to 3m in depth).
Although by no means a strenuous physically demanding course it does require basic fitness and musculoskelatal integrity.
Of note to consider are the demands on the cardiovascular system, respiratory, ears and musculoskelatal (in particular back, knees and shoulders).
For submersion and inversion up to 3 metres it is necessary to be able to equalise adequately to prevent barotrauma to the ear drums, a head cold or bad hay fever needs to be treated / managed before attending the course. Anyone with fear of confined spaces and water would struggle with this component also.
Back integrity is important from the impact of jumping from the 3m platform through to climbing cargo nets, rafts and stairs. Shoulder and knee integrity for these activities and crawling through the smoke room is also essential.
Although being able to swim and being comfortable in the water is very helpful it is NOT a prerequisite for undertaking the pool based activities.
We have trained all our doctors and nurses of these demands to be able to perform a medical examination for your safety.
